Car Ploughs Into Yaowarat’s Guanyin Shrine, Injuring Three
BANGKOK, Thailand – Three people were hurt Thursday when an electric car crashed into the Guanyin Shrine in Bangkok’s Chinatown, after the driver reportedly lost consciousness behind the wheel and hit the accelerator.
The incident happened at 1pm at the shrine on Yaowarat Road, within the Thian Fah Foundation. Pol Lt Col Atthapol Darok, deputy chief of Phlapphla Chai 2 police station, said witnesses described the driver as an elderly man with an underlying blood-pressure condition. He is believed to have blacked out before the vehicle ploughed into worshippers paying their respects inside the 68-year-old shrine.
Two of the three injured were seriously hurt, and some items and structures were damaged, according to FM91 Trafficpro. The Guanyin statue escaped harm, with the sedan coming to a stop right at its base. Emergency responders treated the victims at the scene and took them to hospital.
